Learning Blog for December 8 2014

What did we do?
Today, we finished up our pros and cons for our Lit circle books if we didn't do so already and started on or commercial to "sell" the book so others would want to read it.

Why did we do it?
We did this to improve our skills in working in a group and also seeing the good and also bad things about something and interpreting it to seem desirable to others... I think this sounds a little too business-like, so briefly, its taking the qualities of something and "selling" it.

Reflections and connections.
I think this will be useful down the road for people who want to "sell" something to their audience and make it seem desirable and useful.

HW reminders.
Remember that the paragraph booklet is NOT due tomorrow and we will have time to work on it after winter break.

HW tips.
If you don't want any homework at all to even think about, it's best to finish your paragraph booklets now.

3 word challenge

Study: I chose study because I want to study a bit each night to expand my knowledge so when tests come I am more than prepared. Even when there aren't tests, I will try to study to know more about the topics and subjects we talk about.

Determination: I chose this because determination shows many things. I want to get a high mark for every test I do. I want to acheive my goals in school, and that is when determination comes in.

Concentration: I chose this because I am often distracted with many things while I do my work. Eletronics, people, and other things always come and distract me, which is why I want to concentrate more while doing my work, especially homework.

Three Word Challenge

Hello, my name is Vespasian and here are my three words for my  three word challenge.

Responsibility: I chose responsibility because, sometimes, I don't act my age and only my brother tells me that, (Of course) and sometimes I can be on point like my haircuts. So I have harmed my senses to behave and act responsible for a young adult my age.

Concentrate: I chose concentration because many at times I socialize with my friends when I am actually supposed to be doing my work. So all the things I do in class reflect on the way people have a perspective of me. Which I obviously do not want to be bad. I will try to do my utmost to do better and be better at concentrating in class with will them improve my grades and communication skills.

Determination: I have chose determination because I know I have to do the potential to do things that are easy for me, but, I can tell that I sometimes barely try do my best. My grade 5 teacher always said this to me "You will never know what you can achieve, until you try". So that is really motivating to know that I can do it, and I will.

Learning Log: Friday

On Friday, we had a Teacher On Call named Mr.Choo

WHAT DID WE DO TODAY?
We worked on our paragraph booklets for a short amount of time then after we watched videos about doing the 3 word challenge. Next we worked on our 3 word challenges.

WHY DID WE DO IT?
We did it so we understood a little bit more of our paragraph booklets and we did the 3 word challenge because the end of 2014 is coming and no one ever does their new years resolution. Also the 3 word challenge is much easier to stick by.

HOMEWORK REMINDERS
Just in case, anyone forgot for homework, we have the 3 word challenge to do and dialectical journals for Monday.

3 Word Challenge

Hello everyone, my name is Philip H and this is my 3 word challenge

-Loyal because there were some times where I chose my friends instead of my family when my family needed me most

-Effort because I need to put more effort into everything such as school and soccer. I don't always put a full effort into my homework and projects.

-Concentrate: I need to concentrate more at school and concentrate on what the teacher is saying so I won't be confused on what to do for the rest of the class.

Learning Logs: Tuesday

Today, we did not have much to do due to the cause of the power outage, which lasted 1-2 hours.

What did we do? So today, we had our conferences for our innovation fair proposals. The teacher had reviewed our proposals to see whether our subjects were approved by her or not. While the people had their proposals reviewed, the others did their own homework. Some were unable to do their work, because of the limited amount of light. We spent the whole class reviewing and conferencing our proposals for the innovation fair.

Why? We only did our innovation fair conferences because of the power outage that we received in our first classes

LEARNING BLOG: MONDAY

I hope this is OK I couldn't make it that long because all we did today was lit circle discussions...

WHAT DID WE DO?
Today, despite the fact that we had a T.O.C., we did our lit circle discussions with our books and dialectical journals that we had to prepare for today. We had some difficulty sorting out the groups, but after that we worked really well on our discussions!

WHY DID WE DO IT?
We did our lit circle discussions because we need to practice connecting/asking questions to a text references of sorts. We also did this to practice and enhance our collaborating skills in a group, and asking questions that provoke discussion (deep thinking questions).

REFLECTIONS/CONNECTIONS
I think what we did today in humanities is important because connecting, asking deep questions, and collaborating in a group may come in handy down the road especially when applying for a job. If you can't collaborate well in a group, that narrows the job choices down to the ones that don't require group collaboration, so you have less to choose from.

 HOMEWORK REMINDERS
-If you haven't already done so, finish up your innovation fair proposals, your self evaluation for your lit circles, two group goals and etc., and a brief summary of what your group discussed today (all for tomorrow).
-Don't forget, our last lit circle discussion is next week so prepare your dialectical journals for Monday.

HOMEWORK TIPS
-Choosing a topic for innovation week can be hard... I you're still unsure about what to do, check out this video for help... remember no ideas are original!

What did we do?
Today, we discussed about our package booklet. For example, extra help for people who didnt understand parts of the booklet.

Why?
We talked about this because many people did not understand and needed help with the booklet. Me personally needed help because I actually did not understand it I was way off topic.

Connections and Reflections
Doing our paragraph outlines can help us organize our own paragraphs and learn what a bad and good paragraph looks like. Using the tips and suggestions our teacher gave us can come in handy for future projects that require us to think outside the box. It also helps us understand th main topic more, referring to the story.

Homework reminders
For December 9th Innovation Week Proposal's due. Also dialectical journal for next Monday

Homework tips
You can call or ask an study buddy. Or also go to the blog, or email Ms.Lees

Learning blog for dec.4/14 Thursday

What did we do?
Today, we discussed about our innovation fair ideas and we went through our paragraph package. We also handed in our self assessments as well.

Why?
We talked about our innovation fair ideas because many of us were having trouble thinking of creative innovation fair projects. Our teacher gave us tips and suggestions on how to come up with a great idea for our project. We also learned how to outline paragraphs which can also help us organize our own paragraphs and help us in our writing. On top of that, our teacher discussed with us why we do self assessments and how it will help us in our daily lives.

Connections and Reflections
Doing our paragraph outlines can help us organize our own paragraphs and learn what a bad and good paragraph looks like. Using the tips and suggestions our teacher gave us can come in handy for future projects that require us to think outside the box. And doing self assessments can help us in the future by learning how to reflect on the things we did well and the things we could improve on at our jobs.

Homework reminders
For tomorrow, Decemeber. 5/14 Friday, dont forget to finish the paragraph outlines and to highlight transition words and phrases. Inovation fair proposals are due Decemeber. 9/14 Tuesday and don't forget to do your dialectical journals for next Monday.

Homework tips
You can check other learning blogs to get an example of how to write your learning blog.

What We Did In Class Today

Today in class, we talked about literature circles and asked clarifying questions to make sure every knew what to do with dialectical journals then we discussed when and who was going to post on the blog. We communicated so everyone has days they are comfortable so if someone had soccer, they would tell the whole group that they couldn't post that day because they had soccer. Last of all we had to fill a  "Teacher and/or Self Assessment". We are doing this so we can see what we are good at and what we need work on.

I chose this quote because...

I chose this quote because it tells us to keep a balance in our life just like riding a bicycle, by moving foward. Without continuing to move foward, you would lose your balance, and would fall off the bike. In life, we want to focus to achieve our main goal, but we need proportions to help us get there. We cannot get too out of hand, or else we will lose our progress to complete our main goal in life. For example, some people want to grow up and become a scientist. For that goal to be achieved, we need steps to follow, to keep on track, and to not lose our balance, just like the quote says to us.

Monday, November 17, 2014

I chose this because it is very inspirational to me personally. This quote by Walt Disney shows that the things he did, and the this he created really do show how much he loved his work. I really do love this quote because, I can actually relate. For example, if you don't take risks or choices, you will never know where it will lead you. As my Grade 6 teacher used to say, "You will never know what you can achieve until you try". Keep going, and never give up.

To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong

I chose this picture because it tells us not to be afraid of making mistakes while we are being creative in life. When we are being creative, there shouldn’t be a limit or any rules because part of being creative is letting your mind flow the direction it wants to take you. In life, we are always going to be wrong. The feeling of being wrong is uncomfortable and unpleasant which is why many of us are very cautious and we think too hard on something very simple. That blocks our ability to think outside the box. Life is full of interesting things, but we may never experience any of them if we are always feared of being wrong, and that will trap us in the box of being uncreative and simply the same. I hope this quote will help you loose your fear of being wrong, and live a more creative life.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

I chose this video because it tells you that to get to a solution that it is okay to "break the rules" and to think outside the box because if you "think outside the box" then you get different results then someone who "thinks inside the box" This video is for those who are getting ideas that are not different, lackluster and lack creativity and innovation. It shows that you can get your result that you want if you think differently.

Hum 8 assignment

HUM 8 ASSIGNMENT

This video is called "STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST" from TED talks
I chose this video because it tells us that creativity is never original which is really important. This video relates to what we talked about in class because it talks about creativity just like "OBVIOUS TO YOU, AMAZING TO OTHERS" and how your ideas are always (in a way) original. This post will probably help others realize that taking an idea from another person and then mashing it up with your own ideas is not a bad thing. This video will also encourage other people to not be afraid to "copy an idea" and make it something new; something better. What ideas would YOU like to "copy" and mash up with your own ideas? Would it be better than the original idea? This video encourages creative thinking and is inspirational. I hope you enjoyed this video and learned something new! 😜😜🍭🌈

Leo

Today, we look at one of the clubs that has started a while ago at Fraser Heights Secondary. The Leo club. Leo stands for Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity. It is a club that gives people opportunities to receive volunteer hours, by helping with the community and charities with events such as fundraisers, candy sales, etc. This year, they are helping the LINK (Liberty in North Korea)  and Covenant House (Homeless Youth). I believe Leo club is very beneficial towards every individual for it grants them the experience required in the future. You can meet new people, make new friends, and have tons of fun. The Leo club meets on Tuesdays at lunchtime, at around 11:15, in room 217. They welcome all people who join, whether you’re bad with community things or not, so try giving Leo a try. That is all that we have today for AWSUM news, see you tomorrow, and have a good day.

Robotics Club

Robotics Club

Hello people of my world. I have returned with interesting news from my trip to Earth. My mission was to go to a high school and observe people who join a group called a “club”. So I decided to see the “Robotics Club”. The “Robotics Club” was held in the computer lab. I put on my disguise and went in. There were so many giant sized humans that where bent over like a huge boulders working on their robots. Although there were many older and bigger humans around me, I had to complete my mission. I noticed a small group of male humans called “boys/men/guys” who were next to a strange device. This device controlled the robot they made. I believe the device was called a “laptop”. I was so fascinated by my findings that I decided to make one myself.

At the end of robotics club, I learned that robots are much harder to make than they seem, and when the teacher is not in the room, all the “guys” talk about a video game called “League of Legends”. They also swear very loudly until the teacher comes back and they start pretending to work on their robots.

After this mission, I have learned many things about the humans of Earth and I will like to visit this planet again sometime soon.

Free The Children

Oct.16, 2014          My experience at Free The Children    Philip H

             First Impression (from alien perspective)
When I entered the room full of humans for the Free the Children Club, I saw people on their cellular communicating devices, not listening to the humans speaking at the front and speaking to their allies in the back of the room. This made me think it was not a serious club.

I wanted to join since I helped 50 children in Africa get education for an elementary school project. There was a PowerPoint presentation explaining the country they
were sponsoring which I think was called “ Nicaragua”. They wanted to help Nicaragua by raising money so the little earthlings in Nicaragua can go get an education.

I was going to join this club but with my paperwork and
Extra-curricular activities, I don’t think I would have enough time to stay fully committed to Free The Children.

VOLLEYBALL

Come join the grade 8 boy's volleyball team! Come on in and bring a friend! It's fun, it's recreational and its a great way to meet new people! Are you good at volleyball and you don't know where else you might put those red wrists to work? Come on in! We except a variety of players; whether you're short, tall, thin, or muscular, you always (not really) have a chance at the team. The coach is nice and friendly (as long as you don't play with Starbuck's cups when you should be playing volleyball) and your teammates (should be) friendly too! The volleyball team is full of learning experiences and opportunities, you won't regret it! In fact, you'll have so much fun that you won't even realize that your wrists are red (until after)! You even get a jersey once you make it to the team! Meet other people from other schools just over a fun (competitive) game of volleyball. So come in here and spike a ball! Enjoy the liberty of slapping a ball at your friends while they stumble and fall to receive it! Set up plays with your best buds and watch them move you one step further to making the team! If you don't make the team, at least you know that you failed trying! There's always next year! Ever walk across the trophy case and find a picture of the grade 8 boy's volleyball team and wondered, "I want to join the volleyball team.."? Well this is your chance now! Now come on in and volley some balls! Tryouts after school in the gym.
